Privacy policy

Effective October 13, 2026

moviestar is run by Stego Ventures Inc. (“we”). This page explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it.

The short version: local editing stays where moviestar runs. We do not receive your local videos, transcripts, or project files. If you choose hosted sharing when it becomes available, we receive the finished video you upload and the information needed to deliver and manage it.

What we don't collect

  • Local media. Videos, audio, transcripts, captions, and edit projects stay wherever moviestar runs unless you choose to upload a finished video for hosted sharing. We do not automatically upload your source files or editable project history.
  • Usage data. The moviestar command-line tool and plugin have no usage tracking. They contact us only when you run a command that says it will, such as moviestar subscribe or moviestar feedback.
  • Tracking cookies. This website uses no analytics or advertising cookies. If you sign in to an account, the sign-in service sets the cookies it needs to keep you signed in.

What we collect when you choose to send it

Email updates

If you sign up for updates on this website or with moviestar subscribe, we store your email address, where the sign-up came from (website or command line), the IP address the request came from, and the time. Sign-ups from the command line also include the moviestar version, Python version, and operating system. We send a confirmation email first, and you are not subscribed until you open its link.

Feedback

If you send feedback with moviestar feedback, we store the message you wrote, your moviestar version, and the time. Feedback is anonymous unless you add a follow-up email address. If you add one, we use it only to reply about that feedback. Feedback never automatically includes your project files, file paths, logs, or command history.

Accounts

Accounts are optional, and editing works without one. If you connect an account, we store your email address, the public handle you choose, the name and version of each connected moviestar installation, and the time you agreed to the account terms. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider; we never see it. We keep scrambled (hashed) copies of installation credentials, and of the email and IP address behind each connection request, so we can check credentials and limit repeated requests.

Hosted sharing (when available)

If you choose to host a finished video, we receive that uploaded video, its title, filename, size, duration, owner handle, and the unlisted link identifier. If you ask us to email the link, we also use the recipient address and record delivery status. We record link and upload activity needed to operate the service, enforce storage limits, and investigate abuse. A viewer can report a video; we collect the report details and may access the hosted video to review it.

Anyone with an unlisted link can watch and download its video. An email address used to deliver that link does not limit who can open it. An owner can revoke a link or delete a hosted video, but copies already downloaded by other people remain outside our control.

Website logs

Like most websites, our hosting provider records basic request details such as IP address, browser type, the page requested, and the time. We use these to keep the site running and to stop abuse.

Email you send us

If you email us, we keep the message so we can reply.

How we use it

  • To send the updates you signed up for.
  • To read, answer, and act on feedback.
  • To run accounts and connected installations.
  • To store and deliver hosted videos you choose to share, and to send links to recipients you name.
  • To protect the website and services from abuse.

We do not sell your information, use it for advertising, or use it to train AI models. We do use AI assistants to help us read and sort feedback.

Who else handles it

These companies process information for us, under their own terms:

  • Vercel hosts this website and its services.
  • Neon hosts our database.
  • Resend sends our email.
  • Clerk handles account sign-in and passwords.
  • When hosted sharing opens, an object-storage provider will store finished uploads. We will identify that provider here before uploads are enabled.
  • Discord delivers new feedback to our private team channel. That notice includes the feedback message but never your follow-up email address.

We may also share information when the law requires it. If moviestar is ever sold or merged, your information may move to the new owner, and we will say so on this website.

Other companies' tools

moviestar works alongside tools that other companies run, and their privacy policies cover what they do:

  • Your AI agent. The agent you use with moviestar, such as ChatGPT, Codex, or Claude Code, sees your prompts and the files you give it. If it runs moviestar on its own servers, that company processes your media. We receive only a finished video if you separately choose to upload it for hosted sharing.
  • Downloads. Installing moviestar contacts PyPI or GitHub. The first transcription downloads a speech-to-text model from Hugging Face.
  • Caption lookups. If you ask moviestar to fetch captions from a video page, your computer contacts that site.

How long we keep it

  • Subscriber details: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.
  • Feedback: for as long as it is useful for improving moviestar. We delete a follow-up email address when you ask.
  • Account details: until you ask us to delete your account.
  • Hosted videos: while you keep them stored. Deleting one revokes its links and removes the active hosted copy. If you delete your account, its links stop working immediately and hosted files and recoverable backups are removed within 30 days, except records retained for legal, security, or abuse reasons.
  • Failed or unfinished uploads: until the upload reservation expires and cleanup removes the temporary object. Reports and related records are kept while we investigate and for the period needed to handle appeals, abuse, or legal claims. We will set and publish specific periods before hosted uploads open.
  • Website logs: for the period our hosting provider sets.

Your choices

  • Unsubscribe. Email hello@jdilla.xyz from the subscribed address and we will remove you.
  • Disconnect an installation. Use your account page or run moviestar account disconnect.
  • Manage hosted videos. When sharing opens, use your account page to revoke a link, delete a video, or review storage use. You can also report a video or appeal a moderation decision by emailing hello@jdilla.xyz.
  • See, correct, or delete your information. Email hello@jdilla.xyz. We answer within 30 days, wherever you live.

Depending on where you live, the law may give you further rights, such as the right to complain to a data protection authority.

Security

We use encrypted connections, store credentials only in scrambled form, and limit who can reach the data. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't promise that nothing will ever go wrong.

Children

moviestar is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has sent us information, email us and we will delete it.

Where information is processed

We and our service providers process information in the United States and in other countries where those providers operate.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update this page and its effective date. If a change is significant, we will say so on the website before it takes effect.
